East Memphis Residence

Tennessee

Builder: Autry Construction LLC

Interior Architect: Shapiro & Company

Landscape Architect: Baasch Landscape Architect

Shapiro and Company broke down the scale of this large house by stretching it horizontally across the lot as well as siting the in-law suite to the rear and connecting the two forms with a covered breezeway. The house deftly weaves into the existing neighborhood while adding a dash of interest with its English touch. The entry is discovered upon arriving under a deep covered porch of reclaimed brick, embellished with limestone detail that speaks a slightly dressier language. The entry foyer crosses the main gallery, the horizontal connector to the private suites on one end, and the public family spaces on the opposite end. The wide gallery is artfully articulated with paintings and sculptures, making it an interior room in itself, used more for just coming and going. The public spaces off of the gallery keep watch over the pool terrace and landscaped views of the rear yard through large french doors that allow morning light to filter through and make the house glow from within at night. An interim space off of the kitchen and family breakfast room is the switchboard of the house. Children return home through the side entry, put away their belongings in organized built-in spaces in the children's project room, and start school projects or computer work in their own space that can be checked in on by parents in the adjacent kitchen. The in-law suite is reached by a covered breezeway supported by a symphony of columns that capture views out to the pool terrace. A private library and living space are flanked by window walls that intensify views to the rear yard and give a strong definition to the space. Throughout the home, rich tones of English details-Gothic arches, paneled walls, and rich wood floors contrast with a more ethereal interior color and texture palette to create a strong composition that is as refined as it is graceful. Shapiro & Company was selected to design the overall project as well as the interior architectural details.
