A Memphis English Cottage Designed Around a Custom Home Library

On a temperate afternoon walk, passing by this charming custom home might have you thinking you're in the hillsides of England.

In reality, this beautiful English cottage-inspired home resides in a quiet neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee.

Design Inspiration and Bespoke Materials

Nearly 20 years ago, Architect Brad Shapiro came back from a trip to England with his head swirling with architectural inspiration. Inspiration and opportunity met when he returned; a custom client who wanted a stunning home in Memphis.

The clients were looking to settle down in the city, but wanted to bring to life a home that matched their tastes, personalities, and functional needs. On the aesthetics, they had a unique request from Brad. Trusting the vision of this experienced Architect, they surprised him with a request that he rarely hears:

They gave Brad the freedom to bring this home to life however he envisioned it.

So long as it had a few key spaces, they wanted him to design it with as little input from them as possible. Beautiful, handcrafted brick sourced from a historic building states away, custom graduated slate collaged together piece by piece, and custom millwork carefully cut and put into place throughout, defining this home as a labor of careful thought and meticulous detail.

The Heart of the Home: The Custom Library

One of the few spaces requested by these clients-- a warm home library where they could listen to their expansive collection of music surrounded by their equally impressive book collection.

A Gradual Reveal

From the foyer, a recessed Tudor arch draws attention. Wider than expected, this opening was intentionally proportioned to hold built-in shelving on either side, offering a quiet preview of the purpose of the room beyond without fully giving it away.

The wall surrounding the opening is fully clad in wood paneling, a departure from the plaster used throughout the rest of the home. It is subtle, but before you even step inside there's a noticeable shift in texture and tone that signals something different ahead.

The controlled sequence creates a feeling of compression at the threshold, followed by a release into the full volume of the grand room.

A Space that Opens Upward

Stepping into the library, you're automatically aware that this is the central point of the home.

It's the only two-story room in the house, contrasting the more intimate proportions of the surrounding spaces to signal its grandiosity.

Along three sides of the room, a second-floor catwalk wraps the perimeter, lined entirely with Tudor-arch book shelving. The fourth side opens to the backyard through a full two-story wall of windows, bringing in natural light and adding to the atmosphere of the room with a charming courtyard background.

The catwalk itself is suspended from the ceiling with cables, giving it a lighter presence than its scale might suggest. It allows the structure to do its job without visually interrupting the openness of the space.

There are two ways to reach it. A spiral staircase within the library offers a direct and more private path, while the main staircase in the foyer leads to a second entry point above. The room can be experienced as its own destination or as part of the home’s broader circulation.

Material and Craft

The library’s character comes as much from its material as its form. Every panel of wood was custom cut and installed by hand: lines align cleanly, edges meet without adjustment, and the result is quiet precision that does not call attention to itself but is felt throughout the room.

Elsewhere in the home, plaster walls provide contrast. They soften the light, add depth, and bring a different texture to the primary living spaces. It is a material that performs well over time, both in durability and in how it ages, and it keeps the rest of the home from competing with the richness of the library.

Together, the two create a clear distinction. The library feels grounded and enveloping, stocked full of English charm, while the surrounding spaces remain lighter and more restrained.

Spaces Within the Space

Despite its scale, the library is designed with function in mind. A recessed sitting alcove, framed with a Tudor arch, creates a more intimate corner within the larger room. A stone fireplace anchors the space, adding warmth and weight. It is a place to settle in, separate from the openness of the main floor, and adds to the character of English architecture.

Additional openings connect the library to adjacent living areas, including the den. These can be closed when needed, creating balanced acoustics when functioning as a space to enjoy their music collection.

A Home Shaped Around a Room

Because the library was such a clear priority from the beginning, the rest of the home takes its cues from it.

The overall layout forms an L-shape, creating both privacy and a defined courtyard. From the library’s window wall, the view extends across a small yard and pool, reinforcing the relationship between the interior and the outdoor space.

Beyond, the property continues with two guest cottages, one of which includes a wine cellar, another space the clients had specifically requested. These elements are positioned to feel connected without competing with the main residence.

Even within a city setting, the arrangement creates a sense of separation. The courtyard becomes its own environment, shaped as much by the architecture as by the landscape.

A Home With a Clear Center

Not every home begins with a single defining space.

Here, the library set the direction early. Its scale, its material, and its placement informed the rest of the home, from how you move through it to how each space relates back to it. The early conversations on a client's personality, their values, and the things that hold meaning to them are necessary to create a space so unique and so perfect for them.

Not everyone has an extensive book collection or wants a dedicated music space, but everyone has unique lifestyle that can result in a beautifully crafted and personalized home.
