Nashville Custom Home Architect: The custom home designs that Nashville clients love| Shapiro & Company Architects

Searching for the right architect is a complex task that dictates the way your custom home functions for a lifetime. Balancing personality, design approach, and expertise is no simple task, especially when searching for an architect.
To help in your search, we’ve put together our top custom home and renovation designs that have made our firm popular in the Nashville area.
Oak Hill Renovation
This renovation took a 70’s style ranch home, a common style across the south, and transformed it into a charming Southern-style family home. While the exterior change is striking, the biggest change in this project involved adding an entire second floor to this former one-story home.
Our first step is always getting to know our clients in-depth before starting a design. We discovered they were a young family who wanted their children to have their own spaces, as well as a secondary play-space that could evolve as they get older. With the limited space available in the original first floor, we decided to create a spacious second floor with bedrooms for each of their children and a central playroom area in the middle for them to utilize for playing, or when they’re older hosting sleepovers, birthday parties, or staying up watching movies together.
We restructured the rest of the layout of this house to match their lifestyle needs, like a kitchen with an island open to the living room, a reimagined primary suite, and a covered porch in the backyard for the entire family to enjoy during the summer.
Modern Court Estate
The clients for this home wanted a large home that still felt cozy, two seemingly opposite requests that we worked into one beautiful floorplan.
These clients entertain large family parties, so we designed an open-concept kitchen and living room. For everyday use, we made a smaller breakfast nook for cozier family dinners with the kids. To the side of the kitchen, we broke this area up into 3 small key spaces: a pantry, a scullery, and a hidden bar. These more intimate spaces lining the large spaces creates a difference in scale that gives you the feeling of cozier, smaller spaces with the functionality of larger spaces.
English Cottage
While this project is not in Nashville, this is one of the projects that Nashville clients bring up in our initial design meetings as the type of home they want to bring to life.
Located in Memphis, Tennessee, this custom English-Inspired home is the product of detailed craftsmanship. The exterior is made of reclaimed brick our firm sourced from a demolished historic building in New England. Paired with limestone details, hand-crafted gas lanterns, and a beautiful courtyard-style layout, this home feels extremely custom.
Inside, these clients requested one very special space as the central room in their home: a library for their book collection that doubles as a music listening room for their music collection. We designed a two-floor wood-paneled library with a fireplace, sitting alcove, and all designed for the best acoustics for their music-listening needs.
The footprint of this home, or the overall shape of the floor plan, was dictated by its location in a neighborhood with close-together homes. When the lots are narrow and the neighboring homes are only a few feet away, we want to ensure that none of the indoor or exterior spaces can be seen when they look out their windows.
Since the backyard had a stone wall blocking the views from the neighbor on the left, we shaped the home to have a wing on the right for the garages, which simultaneously blocks the views from the other neighbor’s house, and makes sure that the only spaces they see are the garage doors instead of a window into the main house.
